Dental Implants

Dublin, CA, dentist describes the dental implant procedure for replacing teeth

At StarBrite Dental, we can offer patients dental implant surgery to replace one or more teeth. Even with the continued improvements in preventive and general dentistry, many patients still lose at least one tooth during their lifetime. Regardless of the reason, including old age, gum disease, or injury, it is important to speak to a professional about procedures used to restore the function and appearance of the smile. Dental implants are a popular option because they replace both the lost root and tooth.

The process of dental implants

Dental implants require patients to undergo dental implant surgery. This oral surgery procedure is done to place the implant into the bone of the jaw. The implant itself is made of a metal called titanium, which is used in many areas of medicine to create implants throughout the body. This metal is biocompatible and stimulates the production of bone through a process called osseointegration. The natural bone building blocks tightly integrate into the titanium post making it as a part of the body.  Osseointegration is what provides the implant with the proper foundation it needs to function as a natural tooth would.

The procedure for placing dental implants is straightforward.  Dr Munira and her staff have to plan and evaluate before proceeding with the placement of a dental implant.  X-rays and CBCT scans are taken to ensure patients have sufficient bone to place the implant successfully. Then, the dentist determines the areas to place implants, especially when several are being used. The bone and metal fuse together to create a durable root system that then anchors the new tooth. The implant is then restored in a variety of different ways depending on the patient’s unique situation. The abutment of the implant can be covered with a:

  • Dental crown
  • Dental bridge
  • Full denture (all-on-fours)

All of the options available are discussed with patients when they undergo their initial evaluation with their dentist to determine if they are a good fit for this restoration.
