Dental Health Tips for Kids to Create Long-Lasting Positive Habits

The quarantine year in 2020 led many parents to start to realize things about their children that they might not have noticed before. With so many people moving to a work-from-home model in their day-to-day work lives, it is natural that they might start to notice some of their children’s dental hygiene habits that they had not paid attention to before. This meant that many parents began to look at where to find a dentist for kids that could help them encourage good habits in their children and also look for ways to repair any damage that might already be done. Read on to educate yourself on dental health tips for kids that can be applied every day at home that can lead to better dental health outcomes.

Avoiding Certain Types of Snacks/Drinks

Certain snacks and drinks have been proven to be unhealthy for anyone’s teeth, including children’s. Unfortunately, many of those snacks/drinks are also some of the most popular with children. Think of the high-sugar juices and sodas that children tend to gravitate towards. Those need to be severely cut back if not eliminated from the diet of any child. They are not recommended for adults either, but they are particularly damaging to children’s teeth as they are still developing. Another upside of this change of behavior is that it can lead to lasting behavioral changes for the remainder of one’s life.

Model Good Teeth Brushing Habits

Children have to be taught how to brush their teeth properly. This means showing them by example how to get it done. The biggest aspect that most children need to work on is learning to brush for a designated amount of time. Dr. Munira Lokhandwala of StarBrite Dental in Dublin, California, would recommend that children brush for at least two to three minutes at least twice per day. There are timers available for children to use to figure out exactly how long they need to brush for. This can make it more exciting and fun for them.
