What to expect during your porcelain veneer process

There are several steps a dentist for veneers will require to obtain porcelain veneers from start to finish. Let’s discuss these steps to understand better how your smile can go from drab to fab!

• Step one: Consultation. First, our dentists at StarBrite Dental evaluate you to determine if you are a good fit for the veneer restoration. He or she may talk to you about all your options, including alternatives such as professional teeth whitening, orthodontic treatment, and dental bonding, so you can make an educated and knowledgeable decision regarding which treatment is best for your needs.
• Step two: Preparation. Once you and your dental team have decided to move forward with porcelain veneers for smile enhancement, preparations are made to the natural teeth. This includes filing down a thin amount of enamel to roughen the surface for better adhesion. Additionally, removing a thin layer from the front of the tooth is a great way to ensure the new restorations do not add unwanted bulk.

• Step three: Impressions. Once the tooth or teeth have been prepared, impressions are taken to get a mold of the natural teeth. These are sent out to a ceramist at a dental laboratory with information regarding the color of the teeth for a seamless match. A temporary veneer may be bonded in place after the preparations to protect the tooth until the veneers come back to the office, typically within a week or two.
• Step four: Placement. After the porcelain veneers have returned to our office from the lab, it is time to visit our practice to have the temporary veneers removed and the final restoration put in place. Strong bonding ensures the veneer stays in place with typically biting and chewing forces.
